Crypto ROI and CAGR Calculator

Compare what a holding was worth at the start and the end of a period to get the total return, the growth multiple and the compound annual growth rate (CAGR).

years
Use decimals for part years, e.g. 1.5
CAGR (per year)
–
Total return
–
Growth multiple
–

How it is calculated

  • Total return = (ending value − starting value) ÷ starting value × 100
  • Growth multiple = ending value ÷ starting value
  • CAGR = (ending value ÷ starting value)^(1 ÷ years) − 1

Worked example

1,000 that grew to 8,000 in three years.

You enter
Starting value1,000
Ending value8,000
Period3 years
You get
CAGR (per year)100.0000%
Total return700.0000%
Growth multiple8 ×

The holding grew 8× (700% in total), which is the same as growing 100% every year, compounded.

Questions

Why is CAGR lower than total return ÷ years?

CAGR assumes each year's growth builds on the previous year's, so a smaller yearly rate compounds to the same total. 700% over 3 years is 100% a year compounded (1 → 2 → 4 → 8), not 233% a year.
