How it is calculated

  • Total value = sum of the current values
  • Current share = current value ÷ total value × 100
  • Target value = total value × target % ÷ 100
  • Buy (+) or sell (−) = target value − current value; the buys and sells add up to zero

Worked example

A 10,000 portfolio holding 6,000, 2,500, 1,000 and 500, with targets of 50%, 30%, 10% and 10%.

You enter
Asset 1: current value6,000
Asset 1: target50 %
Asset 2: current value2,500
Asset 2: target30 %
Asset 3: current value1,000
Asset 3: target10 %
Asset 4: current value500
Asset 4: target10 %
You get
Total portfolio value10,000
Asset 1: buy (+) or sell (−)-1,000
Asset 1: current share60.00%
Asset 2: buy (+) or sell (−)500
Asset 2: current share25.00%
Asset 3: buy (+) or sell (−)0
Asset 3: current share10.00%
Asset 4: buy (+) or sell (−)500
Asset 4: current share5.00%

Your portfolio is worth 10,000. Sell the holdings above their target and buy those below: the sells and the buys are both 1,000, so no new money is needed (before fees).

Questions

What does rebalancing mean?

Over time, prices move and your holdings drift away from the mix you chose. Rebalancing is selling part of what has grown above its target and buying what has fallen below, to get back to that mix.

Can I add a new coin?

Yes. Enter 0 as its current value and give it a target. The tool shows how much to buy.

Why must the targets add up to 100%?

The targets split your whole portfolio. If they add up to more or less than 100%, the amounts to buy and sell cannot balance.
